Your AGEs Are in Your Eyes
- When there is excess sugar in the body, it attaches to certain proteins to form molecules called AGEs (Advanced Glycated End Products).
- Higher levels of AGEs are seen in diabetes because of the extra availability of sugar.
- Measuring the AGEs in the eye can be used to assess abnormal sugar metabolism and also to create a baseline to measure disease progression.
- Blue light beam enters the lens of the eye. Fluorescent green light reflects from the lens, revealing AGE levels.
- This new technology measures autofluorescence of the crystalline of the eye. No pupil dilation is required.
